DUBAI, UAE: May 2015 will mark a significant milestone in the history of the Centre for Advanced Professional Practices (CAPP) in Dubai. CAPP will be celebrating its tenth anniversary of successful continuing dental education not only in the United Arab Emirates but also across the Middle East. Through the hard work of its colleagues, sponsors, partners and supporters, CAPP has been able to establish first-class standards for continuing dental education programmes over the past decade. Participants and followers of CAPP programmes have also helped develop professional training according to the needs of the region with their open feedback.

Even as early as the 1950s, the Serengeti had already gained worldwide attention through the numerous documentary films produced by Professor Bernhard Grzimek. The images from Serengeti darf nicht sterben (Don’t let the Serengeti die) were so powerful that he was awarded the Oscar for Best Documentary Film in 1960. Grzimek’s film reporting and personal commitment eventually led to greater sensitivity in the handling of Tanzania’s unique natural resources as well as the expansion and protection of Tanzania’s most important national park: the Serengeti.

DHAHRAN, Saudi Arabia: Surgeons in Saudi Arabia have found a white bony mass inside the nose of a 22-year-old. They said that the mass was an extra tooth growing in the young man’s left nasal cavity. The patient had suffered from nosebleeds once or twice a month for the past three years, the doctors reported.

DAKAR, Senegal: The Italian Dental Industries Association (UNIDI) has announced that it recently entered into a partnership with the FDI World Dental Federation for the organisation of a joint dental event in Senegal. In November this year, the partners will be holding the first International Dental Exhibition Africa (IDEA), the only dental exhibition entirely dedicated to the African continent, alongside the FDI’s African congress.

OMDURMAN, Sudan: An international team of researchers has found new evidence that prehistoric ancestors had a detailed understanding of plants long before the development of agriculture. By extracting chemical compounds and microfossils from dental calculus—calcified dental plaque—from ancient teeth, the researchers were able to provide an entirely new perspective on our ancestors’ diets.

AL-AIN, UAE: According to the World Health Organization, 60 to 90 per cent of schoolchildren worldwide have dental cavities. Tooth decay, which can have a significant impact on the general health and development of children, is also an area of concern in the United Arab Emirates. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates: A new oral health care study, commissioned by international gum manufacturer Wrigley, has found that the majority of people in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have poor oral hygiene habits. Although health authorities advise regular dental visits to prevent oral disease, only one in five people in the country appear to be adhering to this recommendation.
