KIGALI, Rwanda: This week, Dental Recycling International (DRI) announced that it has partnered with the Rwanda Dental Association. DRI provides education on and technology for dental waste recycling throughout the world, and will help the association to reduce the amount of mercury from dental amalgam entering the local environment.

DRI stated that it will install amalgam separators in dental facilities across the country, providing it with the respective technology and recycling services. The overall aim of the initiative is to advance local expertise in amalgam waste management among Rwanda dental professionals and to ensure that dental waste is properly disposed of.

Through the partnership, Immaculèe Kamanzi, President of the Rwanda Dental Association, hopes to promote the health and safety of the local communities. “With DRI, we know that harmful chemicals are being prevented from adversely affecting the livelihood of people throughout this country.”

DRI is a global venture of Dental Recycling North America. It was established to address the new international opportunities presented by the Minamata Convention on Mercury, a global treaty to prevent mercury emissions that was agreed upon in January last year by over 140 governments. To date, 99 countries have signed the convention. DRI is a corporate partner of the FDI World Dental Federation in a number of dental waste management initiatives.
