Even amid a pandemic that has halted many from visiting their dentist regularly, there’s still many things one can do to keep their smile healthy.

In celebration of Align Technology’s Month of Smiles, the global medical device company asked some of the region’s greatest orthodontists for some tips around how to maintain a healthy and radiant smile. Here’s what they had to say:

Dr. Joy Antony, Specialist Orthodontist, Founder & MD – Dr. Joy Dental Clinic, UAE: “A clean, healthy mouth is fundamental to everybody’s quality of life. Much of what goes into your body is connected to your oral health, and the condition of the mouth, teeth and gums can be an indicator of oral hygiene. Brush your teeth twice daily, and eat a healthy diet that is low on sugar and starch, and high in calcium and protein. This can include raw fruit and vegetables. This is an important part of keeping your mouth healthy.”

Dr. Ayat Alzaki, Invisalign provider/Consultant Orthodontist, Central Care, KSA: “A healthy mind starts with a healthy mouth, and a healthy mouth can be reflected by a beautiful smile. A good smile can only be achieved with straight white healthy teeth. I highly recommend daily brushing and flossing, regular orthodontic evaluations, and teeth whitening sessions if needed.”

Dr. Suliman Shahin, Orthodontist, KSA: “A smile is the best thing you can wear! With no doubt, the pinnacle of a healthy smile is achieved through good oral hygiene practice and habits. Three habits will ensure you a long-lasting smile: Regular tooth brushing, flossing and routine dental check-ups. And finally, keep in touch with your dentist, you friend forever!”

Dr. Ghassan Al-Turki, BDS, MSD, DScD, CAGS, ABO, FRCDC Assistant Professor & Consultant of Orthodontics: “A smile is the first thing people notice; it plays an essential role in establishing a first impression. Because of this, we greatly value how our smiles look. To ensure your teeth remain healthy and beautiful, it is important that you consider your diet; a balanced diet with minimal sugars is ideal in order to keep your teeth vibrant. Investing in your smile can have many quality of life benefits; maintaining it is key to ensure that these benefits last a lifetime.”

Dr Ahmed Alhafne, Consultant Orthodontist, Head of Orthodontics - AHS, SEHA, UAE: “My personal tip to you to ensure a radiant smile is to reduce the intake of soda drinks, they contain acids which cause the outer layer of your teeth to be weak and consequently loose its shine. Make sure you maintain good tooth brushing habits and visit your dentist every 6 months to have your regular checkup done!”
